Sometimes When you’re feeling low, ruminating thoughts and feelings of hopelessness characteristic of depression, that time all you want to do is crawl into bed and watch a good movie. The problem is, sometimes it’s hard to figure out what to watch when you’re feeling depressed.

I wouldn’t consider myself a film aficionado, although sitting in front of a TV makes me feel a little languid, which is a good thing when you’re feeling a little bored on a Friday night.

But one thing i know is that there are special movies that inspire us. They’re like a drug. After watching them, you want to live life to the extreme, take chances, and be a better person. Such movies are not only the great masterpieces that have touched the hearts of millions, but also the simple comedies that make you laugh

Here i have curated a list of movies which will inspire and empower people be it at school, work and in life.

* If you or someone you know is dealing with depression please share these movie recommendations. Depression is about withdrawal and movie heroes can help individuals feel like they are not alone. These movie heroes can remind them of their inner strengths to believe in themselves and keep shining.

1. A Beautiful Mind

This Oscar winning film is based on the true story of Dr. John Nash (Russell Crowe) and his perseverance and resilience through years of mental illness. His will to continue to live and teach others despite his mental challenge is inspiring. Equally important is the unconditional love and support from his wife Alicia Nash (Jennifer Connelly). Together their story is a reminder of how important caring, supportive relationships are during mental challenges and other difficult times.

 2. The Shawshank Redemption

This film about a wrongfully accused accountant named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is an inspiring mirror for your inner strengths and effective methods in dealing with depression. It is Andy’s indestructible optimism, attitude and vision of the life he wanted that can be applied to coping with seemingly hopeless, long term situations. His creative solutions and projects he instigates while imprisoned can motivate you on how to remain positive and productive during mental health challenges.

 3. Silver Linings Playbook

’Silver Linings Playbook’ is a title that best describes how you feel after watching this movie. It’s a very interesting, memorable, and touching story about two people whose lives aren’t going the way they would like. Watching them work through their problems and accept their faults will definitely make you all feel like you could make it through okay too. And all the adorable dance scenes will make you get up out of bed and wanting to be moving and active again. The movie gives you more than just inspiration, it gives you hope. This movie will certainly bring a smile on your face.

4. Good Will Hunting

I personally love this movie, Its about a guy who is really smart but wasn't given great circumstances in his life and he gets to know a professor because he's a math genius. Both him and the professor bond over their troubled past and the film ends in a very happy way despite all the sad moments.

‘You’ll have bad times, but it’ll always wake you up to the good stuff you weren’t paying attention to.’

5. The Pursuit of Happyness

Will Smith and his son, Jaden, bring to life the true story of a father-son family valiantly struggling to step up from the bottom rung of the ladder in 1980s San Francisco. The struggle of common man and his attitude to never give up is highly  inspiring. The performances were so natural and so endearing enough to keep you engaged. The plot is so engaging and so realistic that you feel as if all the characters are around you.

6. Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind

If you are someone who is going through a breakup, you should definitely watch this one, for broken relationships to leave their mark.

Two people come into a relationship with each other, unaware of the fact that they were in a relationship earlier too, which ended up on a bitter note, and the memories of which have been removed by medics.

Amazing, aren’t they? Take a break from life, slow down the pace, and let these beautiful pieced of delightful cinema entice you, from the first scene.

7. The Blind Side

The Blind Side is a well written film be it its contemporary facts and astounding story line that makes us feel good about ourselves.

In short its light, entertaining, and even though the main character Mike is shy and reserved, we get to know him and feel compassionate towards his situation.

None of us ever think that we’re going to go blind. And even it happening to someone we know would be unimaginable, but the lines, story line and characterization lures you in so you feel like it’s actually happening to someone close to you.

Adapted from a book, it makes it even more emotional and personal.

8. Finding Neverland

It reminds me of how beautiful of an escape the imagination can be. And it is a nice way to show people you can care for others even if you aren’t related to them.

Watch and cry as much as your allowing you. This is a beautiful movie that defines human emotions and the complexities that feelings bring forth. Watch it and let its beauty wash over you.

It carves out the troubles of a young mind, and how to overcome them too. And also, that it all comes down to love, understanding, and love of those around you.

9. Peaceful Warrior

This movie tells about a promising gymnast. It’s based on real events, but it seems more like fiction. The dialogues are philosophical, but not moralizing. This picture will kill your internal whiner and make you appreciate every moment of your life.

10. The Bucket List

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman bonded over so much in this movie that it made it even greater than it was supposed to be. This movie is a masterpiece because every single moment of it is filled with brilliant dialogues, actors’ play, and lines of inspiration. The dialogues aren’t boring, they teach you that life’s passing you by right now, and you should seize every moment. Don’t be waiting for tomorrow.

 11. Begin Again

Begin Again' is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.
